Your instinct to consult a therapist stems from the fact that you were searching for empathy, support, and active listening. Instead of trying to solve your problem with advice, therapists are trying to listen to your qualms and guide you to a decision. Here are some things they wish you knew about their profession:

  1. I’m Not Trying To Win Your Praise

It is not a therapist’s job to make you like them. Every therapist has his or her own techniques that they employ to get the job done. Whether it works for you or not is a question you need to ask yourself. If it works, then you are more likely to like the therapist. If not, then this particular therapist might not be the one for you.

  1. Why Didn’t You Come Earlier?

Although your therapist might have just met you, they can quickly figure out that your issues have lingered for months or years. There is no shame in seeking out that active listening from a trained professional. It is not healthy to wait until a time of crisis to talk to a therapist.

  1. Crying Is O.K.

Crying is not a weakness. It is a sign that your emotional attributes are functional. Many therapists say that someone’s greatest strength comes right after they have cried. You do not always want to cry but it is O.K. to do so with a therapist.

  1. Therapists Are Still Professionals

Even if you really like your therapist and would like to befriend them, you have to remember that they are still professionals. Their effectiveness in the job might become affected by a friendly relationship. You need to establish that professional connection and stick to it in order to fully appreciate the work that he or she does.

There is no reason to back away from seeing a therapist. They might be the person you need to talk to the most in times of crisis. However, keep in mind that they are here to help you reach a decision by yourself. By better understanding what their job is, you can better utilize their skills in resolving your problems.
