Everyone gets a little down on themselves from time to time. But it’s important that you don’t wallow in it or let a lack of confidence keep you from living your life. Whether you’re just a little nervous or have taken a major blow to your self-esteem, there are lots of ways to build your confidence.
There are some days when you just need a small boost, like before a big interview, a first date, or a meeting with your boss. There are plenty of simple ways to ease nerves and up your confidence. Wear something that makes you feel great and make an effort to look your best, which can help you feel your best, as well. Listen to some upbeat music that improves your mood. You can also do a “power pose” in the mirror. Standing with your feet hip distance apart, put your arms in the air in a “V” shape and pose for two minutes.
Unfortunately, there will also be times when you get into a much bigger funk and need a bigger solution to help you feel confident again. If you’ve experienced a major life event, such as the loss of a job or end of a relationship, you can feel like you’ve failed. Maybe in some ways you have. Take some time to honestly examine those failures and learn from them. Look at the ways in which you’ve succeeded, as well. List those things out. Try to find ways to combine your successes with the lessons you’ve learned. Also take the time to tell yourself how great you are. We spend so much time comparing ourselves to others, which wreaks havoc on our self-confidence. Just because we’re not like someone else doesn’t mean they’re better.
True confidence is about an internal mindset, but that doesn’t mean other people can’t help. Talking things out with a close friend or family member can be very beneficial. Seeking out professional counseling is a great option, and a licensed counselor can help you find ways of coping with a lack of confidence.
Sometimes, you can fake it ‘til you make it. Put on your biggest smile, remind yourself how great you are, and face the world until you feel confident again.
Other times, know matter how many tips and tricks you try, you’re still going to feel a little unsure of yourself. Just accept that feeling down can sometimes be a part of life, and let yourself sit compassionately with yourself at those times. Trust that like the clouds, this too will pass.
